Halogen began in the summer of 1997, when singer/composer Sabrina and composer Cody Kirkwood decided to record their first song, Pornographica. The recording was done in their home studio in Austin, TX while they were both attending the University of Texas. After much acclaim from their friends and supporters, Cody and Sabrina decided to take their ambitions more seriously and drafted a list of possible band names while beginning a recording project that would span through the next year and ultimately produce their first album, 130 dB. Rather than wrangle with the big name publishing and recording companies, they founded their own production company, Basscat Productions (inspired by Sabrina's cat, Macavity, who loved to sleep on top of the subwoofer while their drum and bass pounded throughout the living room) and took their music to their fans through the internet.
Their first airplay was gained through the DJs at Atomic Café, the local goth/industrial nightclub, when they graciously showcased Halogen's demo song Divine Revelation. Further songs were debuted at Atomic Café - Enigma, Resonator, Steam, and Type 3 (revised) - which gained Halogen a small but loyal cult following, and ultimately led to their first gig on September 23, 1998 at the same location. The gig went very well, despite the headlining act not showing up, and we were very touched by the warm acceptance of the fans there, Sabrina recalled. After the unfortunate death of Randall Goodwin, former owner of Atomic Café and pioneer influence in promoting the band, Halogen found themselves without the local support they needed to play live shows, and decided to direct their efforts back into the studio. The result of two years work is the forthcoming album, Moving Machinery, and the band's desire to take up touring again soon.
